I want to buy a BMW for a good price but I have know idea how to drive a manual b/c I use an automatic 1995 Honda Accord. bmw 5 speed manual, body type:sedan, engine: 6 cylinder

did you use stick shift or auto for driving lessons?

if you did lessons and test in auto, then your licence will only be to drive an auto (uk)

you will have to take lessons in a stick shift, followed by a test to drive a stick shift.

and when you do, it is far more fun!

Is the 1999 Volkswagen Passat a safe car?

I’m sixteen and I just got my first car, a 99 volkswagen Passat. Just wanted to know if any of you knew how safe it is. Thanks!

It is a phenomenally safe car. In fact the passat has the 3rd lowest deathrate.

Aside from the fact that the amount of "car" or the size of the hood has absolutely nothing to do with safety. It is how the crumple zone is engineered. Force is what kills people in collisions, period.

The passat is probably one of the safest cars in the market at the moment.

Please look into:

- Timing belt replace (and water pump and associated goodies etc) at 60k miles or immediately if it has more miles than that and never been replaced.

- If you have the 1.8T please use only synthetic oil. PLEASE!!!!

- Look into transmission/coolant/engine flush. Really easy DIY if you follow the walkthroughs on the website I will post below.

- Maintain your car yourself, and like the devil, and you will have an awesome machine. You’ll love this car, and will never go anything but German, if you do keep her up.

I’m specifically after used or refurbished parts for a 325 and 328.

For used/refurb parts: Bavarian Auto Recycling: http://www.bmrparts.com/

For new parts: Tischer bmw usually has the lowest prices: http://www.getbmwparts.com/

BavAuto is also a good source as mentioned above but Tischer prices on OEM parts are usually lower.

is it okay to use regular oil change for 2005 Volkswagen passat?

Posted on : 08-02-2010 | By : admin | In : Volkswagen

Someone told me that 2006 volkswagen passat need special oil for oil change.

Oil is oil my a–. NEVER listen to the VW dealer. VW had a MAJOR warranty problem because incompetent dealers (some who overfill your oil) were using "normal" oil, most likely 10w30, which in the end created sludge problems and damaged engines / turbos. Only if you had ALL your oil change receipts were you reimbursed by VW for the engine repairs. Some of it was no doubt due to owners taking excessive liberties in their oil change interval. The problem occured with the 1.8T engines Turbo engines that generate a lot of heat or have confined spaces need special oil to deal with it, same goes for other German engines with tighter engine tolerances. Would you put .99 cent 5w20 that is for a Honda, into a Ferrari?

Both the 1.8 4cyl and V6 engines require 5w40 oil, which meets VW / Porsche 505.01 specs. Mobil 1 0w40 qualifies. Your owners manual will also state this, and that if this oil is not available you CAN use other weights, but it’s not recommended long term. These oils cost about $6 a quart. Other oils which you have to buy online cost roughly the same, but are manufactured in Europe and imported. Those being Pentosynth, Motul, ELF. I just switched to Pentosynth for my twin turbo A6 because I read about quality changes in Mobil 1. It’s worth the expense to make sure my turbo is lubed and cool at high temps. Personally I’m so confident in these synthetic oils that I run it until the 8,100 mile service indicator comes on. But since mine is out of warranty and I do all the work, I can run it that long, and I would only have myself to blame.

If I were you, I’d just buy the oil online like I do and the majority of knowledgeable VW / audi owners do, and change it yourself and keep the receipts, or bring the oil to the dealer and have them put it in and stamp your owners manual for the visit. It prevents them from getting the chance to overfill and ruin your engine as well.

Realize dealers (including VW/Audi) buy oil in bulk because they usually sell more than 1 brand of car, and it’s cheaper to do that, use the minimum spec oil to save money across all brands of cars. So they’re not going to accommodate you with the proper weight oil unless you fork over $$$, or it is mandatory, like for diesels or using 5w20 oils in newer asian / US cars, which they only invented to save gas since it’s so thin and it hardly protects. And they won’t have the German brand anyway because it’s imported.

I suggest you call your dealership and ask the service writer what oil they use and if they have any other brand that is available at higher cost, and they will most likely say no. I did that and was not satisfied with their answer (and I told them what engine it was for) for my expensive baby A6 twin turbo. I will ONLY accept the best oil and the oil that is recommended for it, which they wanted to use a cheap 5w30. UNACCEPTABLE for such an expensive to replace high performance engine.

When I had a ‘02 B5.5 Passat 1.8t, I used 0w40 at the second oil change and every 5k mi. I never had a problem for 40k miles when I got rid of it.

!!! NEW INFO: Apparently sludge can just as easily occur with the V6 as evidenced by a new post on yahoo answers in the Audi section.

how much more expensive is automotive work and parts for bmw compared to say honda or toyota?

i would like to buy a bmw but im afraid of the repair costs

Parts cost more for a BMW. It’s really kind of common sense. A bmw costs more because it is made up of more expensive, higher quality parts. They cost a lot when they break, but if you take care of it and get a warranty, you should be fine. BMWs aren’t junk.

What is the correct tyre pressures for Bridgestone Potenza 225/50R17 in psi on a BMW 5 series?

Posted on : 05-02-2010 | By : admin | In : BMW

Hi, I have a used bmw 5 series which has Bridgestone Potenza 225/50R17 tyres (run flats) all round. Can someone tell me the correct tyre pressures in PSI for front and rear tyres…Thank You.
3 answers and 3 different answers. Come on guys give me an answer that’s consistant….

Following the recommendations posted in the driver’s door pillar is the right procedure. But the low tire pressure in front is disconcerting to some drivers.
If you can stand a tiny little bit of roughness in riding comfort, then you can increase the front tire pressures to 36 or 38 psi. You would hardly notice the roughness but could possibly gain a little more mileage due to less rolling friction.
If you are a stickler for rules then just stay with manufacturer’s recommendations.

why would a transmission on a 2000 volkswagen passat be replaced after 5 years and 50,000 miles?

Posted on : 05-02-2010 | By : admin | In : Volkswagen

i found a 2000 volkswagen passat and i got the free carfax from the dealer. it said that the first owner after 5 years and 50,000 miles had the transmission replaced. why would that owner have done that?
its an automatic. but yes it does have the tiptronic shifting, as do all passats of that era

The automatic transmissions on VW’s used before 2006 were not of the greatest quality; rough shifts, delayed shifts, delayed engagement of gears from shifting from park to drive or reverse… were amoung numerous issues that the automatic transmissions had during this time. It could have been a slow leak in the transmission that caused the fluid level to fall too low, thus cooking the trans; the fact is, we are unlikely to find out the actual cause.

Updates to the software, which regulated the automatic transmissions helped a great deal, but didn’t correct wear and tear that had occured before the various updates. Also, if the vehicle overheated that caused issues as well.

Still, even for the transmissions that have had all the updates performed, the transmissions were less reliable than average. VW changed suppliers of the transmission in some models after 2005 and later, these transmissions have so far proven to be more reliable than the previous generation. Some models have transmissions now supplied by Aisian-Warner, the people who supply many of the Japanese manufacturers, so I expect that these models will in fact be outstanding in reliability. VW is making changes to their vehicles to make them more relaible.

Hope this helps, a car nut.
