I am restoring a 944 2/5 auto 85 plate and need bits and bobs i know the door handles of a golf, but are there any german car bits that fit the porsche, interior trim, engine bits or anything else that people would know about. Thanks guys and girls, any reply is appreciated. Please feel free to ask me about your car problems, i have been doing cars for 12 years.
Regards.
I suggest checking out rockauto.com and pelicanparts.com, when you look up a specific part you can bring up the year, make, model, category, part… and then click on the part number, it’ll bring up the buyer’s guide on the site and let you know what that part will fit.
For instance… i go to rockauto, go to the catalog, look up porsche, 85, 944, 2.5L 2475cc L4 MFI, emission, Thermo Vacuum Valve, click the part number and now i have a list that shows me that the same part not only fits my 944, but an audi 4000 from 1980-1983 or a 1984 Audi 4000 S, or even a VW Fox from 1987-1993.
You can do the same thing on pelican parts by looking up the porsche, category, part # and then going to "More info" and it’ll tell you what other cars it will fit. Though they are mostly geared directly towards Porsche/bmw, etc… so it usually only shows other correlating Porsches. Rockauto is more in depth by showing you entirely different brands.
So hunt and peck away for what you need and you can search in a junk or heap yard, used parts, or even order them from there and you’ll have that puppy back in shape in no time
Keep in mind also that things such as the tail lights from the 924 are interchangeable as well as the seat brackets and other simple things, the hatch is also directly interchangable from the 924 and the 944 so if you find a totaled 924 you can sometimes salvage parts from that (though keep in mind the engines and transmission are different, though they can be adapted with modification, but its mostly going to be the interior and exterior pieces that are changeable). The 924 and 944 can also have the headlight motors and headlight arms adapted and changed, etc… the 944 is basically just a beefed up 924 and the 924 doesn’t hold value well, so finding a junked or heaped one that may have some parts you need can sometimes be easier. Check ebay as well because you can also hunt down 924/944 and Audi 4000 parts because the Audi 4000 carries a lot of parts that are swappable. Like I said, check Rockauto for the exact pieces so you know what you are looking for before you go jumping into a pile of cars looking.
Have fun! The 944 is a great car! I also recommend 944online.com as they are 100% dedicated to the 944, great bunch of people over there!
PS: Check your timing belts on it if you haven’t done so already… you do NOT want the belts to snap unless you like rebuilding engines.
