I’m sixteen and I just got my first car, a 99 Volkswagen Passat. Just wanted to know if any of you knew how safe it is. Thanks!

It is a phenomenally safe car. In fact the passat has the 3rd lowest deathrate.

Aside from the fact that the amount of "car" or the size of the hood has absolutely nothing to do with safety. It is how the crumple zone is engineered. Force is what kills people in collisions, period.

The passat is probably one of the safest cars in the market at the moment.

Please look into:

- Timing belt replace (and water pump and associated goodies etc) at 60k miles or immediately if it has more miles than that and never been replaced.

- If you have the 1.8T please use only synthetic oil. PLEASE!!!!

- Look into transmission/coolant/engine flush. Really easy DIY if you follow the walkthroughs on the website I will post below.

- Maintain your car yourself, and like the devil, and you will have an awesome machine. You’ll love this car, and will never go anything but German, if you do keep her up.

very safe car. it has all the good modern safety equipment in it, ABS, Traction Control, Crumple Zones, Airbags.

but, these are all "helpers" and the best way to keep a driver safe in a car is to know how to drive it in any given situation under all conditions. a defensive driving school and real world driving experience makes a big difference.

    welcome to the Volkswagen Community!!
